My Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe

It's Hot Cocoa Time! A easy homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe to keep you and your family warm this winter

Now that the weather has finally cooled down here in Houston, the kids’ favorite afternoon treat is hot cocoa. It’s perfect for a cool afternoon or to warm up after playing outside in the mud or the rain. J, in particular, really likes a cup to sip on during his online Robotics class.

Here’s the homemade hot cocoa recipe I use:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup powdered cocoa (I use a store brand)
  • 4 cups of milk or enough powdered milk and water to make 4 cups of milk
  • miniature marshmellows, optional and to taste
  • Candy canes, as a special treat and definitely optional

In a medium sauce pan (2.5 – 3 quarts), whisk together the sugar and cocoa so it’s well mixed. Then wisk in the milk.  If you are using powdered milk, wisk the powder in with the sugar and sugar, then wisk in the water.

Heat gently on medium then low until warm, mixing periodically. Serve when warm . My kids love it with mini marshmellows and for a special treat, a small candy cane.

Some Tips:

If I’m particularly busy, I’ll just heat it on low, so I don’t run the risk of forgetting it and scalding the milk. It’s better to be safer on low than to ruin a batch.

This recipe gets me about 4-5 mugs of hot cocoa, enough for the kids each to have a mug. But they usually come back for seconds and thirds, so I usually double it. If we are having friends over, I triple it.

If you are doubling it, use a pan big enough to comfortably stir 2 quarts (8 cups) of hot cocoa.  For a triple batch, the pan needs to be big enough to comfortably stir 12 cups of hot liquid, so be sure you have a big enough pan, otherwise it gets messy. Guess how I know that :)

When making a double or trip batch, know that it’ll take a while to warm up, but you can leave it on low for a couple hours and just stir occasionally so that a film doesn’t build up. If it does, no worries. Just skim it off and serve the next mug.
