In Our Homeschool This Week

For the rest of the kids in our county, last Monday was the first day of school. So on Sunday night, Greg, who has an hour commute when school is in session, announced to Z that Monday was the first day of school.

Poor Z. All Monday morning he was confused. Finally he asked what he was supposed to be doing differently.

Boy was he relieved when I explained that He didn’t have to do anything differently. He could go about his day the way he normally does, but the only thing different is that Cub Scouts started again on Monday night. :)

So what have we been up to in our homeschool?

Well to give our free-wheeling summer schedule a shot in the arm so the kids were back in  activity mode, two weeks ago we had a very busy week – two museum field trips, two social activities with friends, and Boy Scout Leadership Lock-in for J.  Too busy.

Thankfully, this week was more like normal.  Our activities are starting back up again, but aren’t in full swing.

Here’s a bit of a glimpse of our last couple weeks:

Z at the Terracotta Warriors Exhibit

Z at the Warriors, Temples, and Tombs exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Little E exclaiming over the ancient alligator in new Paleontology Hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Trying to figure out how the giant pendulum works at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Kgirl and I went to the see the Japanese drummers, Taikoza, at the Miller Outdoor Theater. Great show, Kgirl came home with a cd, which she is now playing every day!

J decided that he needed lists to help manage what he needs to do in Minecraft, and asked for help imposing limits to manage his minecraft addiction. :)

J's robot building inspired Z to dig out his Legos and start building again.

A few episodes of Man Woman Wild triggered a study into firebuilding techniques this week. Z decided to try his hand at making a torch. (no worries, all firebuilding was done with full safety and supervision!)

Kgirl helped her dad build the above ground swimming pool we got on clearance, while Little E and Z built the pool ladder. Now we're learning pool chemistry :)

For our Friday field trip this week, we headed to the indoor archery range and had an archery lesson. Kgirl starts weekly lessons next week!

Kgirl wrote her FlexiClip review

Kgirl began working towards her goal of getting her pilot's license with a Young Eagles flight. Next step, ground school. Thank You Matt and EAA's Young Eagles program!!

oh and somewhere in there Kgirl and I got a couple Physics lesson done (we’re taking the class together), she read a ton of books, J finished all three books in the Hunger Games series in 5 days, and there were more discussions than I can possibly keep track of on a whole variety of subjects – including artillery patterns, explosions, and a lot of “how do you spell?” questions from J.

It’s been a good week, and an easy start back to activities.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Julie,
The Archery range we use in Houston is http://houstonarcherylessons.com. It’s run by a husband and wife team, has 20 lanes, and has some great instructors. Enjoy!
